2nd Assistant Sound

A relatively new grade within the Irish TV and Film industry, but internationally has proven to be an invaluable team member. The 2AS is the transitionary grade between trainee and the highly skilled and pressurised position of 1AS. It is in this role that the varied skills needed within the sound department are honed and perfected. Having excelled as a trainee, the 2AS shoulders more responsibility within the sound department.

The 2nd Assistant Sound supports the Sound Mixer and 1st AS, ensuring smooth audio capture. They set up microphones, administer cast mics, handle cables, maintain equipment, and manage the RF environment by coordinating wireless devices across various departments. The 2nd AS helps maintain quiet on set and manage background noise, contributing to high-quality sound. Their role is crucial for capturing clear dialogue and ambient sounds, enhancing the cinematic experience.
